We already see more use of NFTs within the sports world, whether through dedicated marketplaces or individual launches from sports teams. But a potential $34 million deal between the English Premier League and NFT fantasy soccer game Sorare could be one of the biggest yet.
As per recent reports, the two are currently in negotiations regarding a multi-year contract. Under this contract, the clubs that play in the league could launch projects that allow fans to buy dedicated NFTs. Given how popular the league is, with millions of fans worldwide, and the top soccer stars who play in it, this is a big deal.
NFTs Coming to the Premier League
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time that the Premier League is pursuing the idea of NFT development. Earlier this year, the league was reportedly close to signing a similar deal with ConsenSys but backed out due to the lower amount being offered. But this potential deal with Sorare will likely bring better financial opportunities to the teams.
Obviously, it is too early to say what types of NFTs Premier League fans would be getting but there are several options. The selling of top sports moments as NFTs has proven to be popular a la NBA Top Shots and then there is possibly selling exclusive experiences and content access as NFTs.
Regardless of what eventually happens with this Sorare deal, the sky is the limit for the Premier League’s NFT future.
