Of late, a number of significant projects have emerged that use NFTs to provide tangible ownership of real-world objects. One noteworthy addition is Particle, an NFT company specializing in bringing multi-million-dollar masterpieces to everyday collectors.

Over the summer, Particle raised $15 million in seed round funding, and subsequently used the bulk of those funds to purchase an artwork by infamous street artist, Banksy. The piece in question, “Love is in the Air,” set them back a hefty $12.9 million. It features a stencil painted protestor throwing a bunch of flowers in place of a molotov cocktail.

The company has now split the work into 10,000 “particles,” each represented by an NFT, and heading into the new year, intends to sell each one for approximately $1,500 each, thereby providing a tangible ownership experience for people who aren’t millionaires. Following the sale, owners can then choose to hold the NFTs, or, trade them on the secondary market, while the original artwork tours art exhibitions throughout the world.

Particle is the brainchild of former Head of Contemporary Art at Christie’s auction house, Loïc Gouzer, and follows up on a dream of art ownership that was once out of his grasp. By using the technique of fractionalization through NFTs, they can provide a secure method of maintaining a multi-faceted ownership of an artwork. All the while, running an efficient and scalable project through the Avalanche blockchain. As a result, the Banksy sale is the first of many art masterpieces destined for the platform.
