Vodafone are set to auction an NFT of the world’s first ever text message. The proceeds of the auction will go to the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to support people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution.

The world’s first-ever SMS, which reads ‘Merry Christmas,’ was sent and received on the Vodafone network on December 3rd, 1992. The NFT is a detailed and unique replica of the original communication protocol, and will be auctioned by Aguttes Auction House in Paris on Tuesday 21st December. The winner of the auction will have to buy the NFT using ETH.

The NFT bursts with novelty and uniqueness through the way it converges cutting-edge technologies of today with those of thirty years ago. Maximilian Aguttes, Founder of Aguttes Auction House, had this to say:

The first printed book, the first phone call, the first email – all these inventions have changed our lives and communication in the world. This first text message received in 1992 is a historic testament to human and technological progress – we are delighted to be able to support the sale of this landmark piece of history for this cause.

The UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, is a charity that aims to support the 82.4 million people who have been forcibly displaced. The proceeds from the auction will go towards the continuation and improvement of the programs they have in place for transforming the lives of refugee individuals, families, and communities.
