The goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Neil Gaiman, is auctioning an NFT of his influential poem’s film, ‘What You Need To Be Warm’. The proceeds from the auction will go to the UNHCR, in an effort to raise funds to support the many Afghans who’ve been displaced amid the Taliban takeover.
The NFT film, which is a cinematic manifestation of Gaiman’s humanitarian-inspired poem, is being auctioned via Mara Panda NFT Charity Auction, and currently has an opening bid of 38.5 WETH (or approximately $118,500). The winning bidder will additionally receive an exclusive ‘explainer’ video which lays-out the evolution of the project, a signed copy of Gaiman’s ‘The Sandman’ comic book, and an accompanying personalized message.
In addition to all the proceeds being donated to the UNHCR in support of vulnerable Afghans, 20% of the resale value for all subsequent sales of the NFTs in question will also be donated to UNHCR.
The auction was set up with the primary aim of allowing authors, artists, NFT influencers, and athletes to raise money through NFT auctions. Other participants in the project include Khaled Hosseini, the author of ‘The Kite Runner’ and ‘A Thousand Splendid Suns,’ as well as illustrator Dan Williams, who together donated 17 original ink and watercolour illustrations from Housseni’s short book ‘Sea Prayer’.
