Pop royalty Madonna is living up to her self-proclaimed ‘Material Girl’ label through her hefty acquisition of a Bored Ape Yacht Club (BAYC) NFT. 180 ETH ($462,800) is the reported amount of money in which the star used to inaugurate herself onto the Web3 stage, with the concierge services of crypto-payment company Moonpay helping complete the transaction.

Madonna announced her A-list purchase of Bored Ape #4988 via an Instagram post to her 17.8 million followers, where she said: “I finally entered the metaverse,” whilst also asking fans what she should name the female-gendered ape. Like many Blue Chip NFT purchases, a singular announcement post isn’t the end of its social media flaunting, as the Michigan star has since uploaded it as her PFP on Twitter.

Oddly, and for unknown reasons, the image which Madonna uploaded to Instagram didn’t exactly match up with the actual NFT she had purchased, as the cigarette in the cartoon ape’s mouth had been photoshopped out, whilst the image’s background colour had been changed from orange to blue.

Madonna joins a long list of music industry icons, such as Justin Bieber and Eminem, in the excusive club of the Bored Apes.
