Take a moment to think of famous, well-acclaimed artists throughout history. Maybe you thought of Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Picasso, or Michelangelo, et al. What’s one thing they have in common? They’re all male. The great majority of modern and classic art is male dominated.
The State of the NFT Art World
In 2021, Non-Fungible Token (NFT) art burst onto the scene and gained massive attention. Based on blockchain technology, it was new, innovative, and exciting. But even within the NFT art world, there were still massive disparities in gender. Per World of Women Art: “According to research published in November, 2021, female artists accounted for just 5% of all NFT art sales in the prior 21 months.”
Unfortunately, it doesn’t come as a surprise that NFT art collections were male-dominated as the Crypto world fits the same characteristics. It’s no secret that most cryptocurrencies are owned by males and also built and developed by males. This male domination also made its way into the NFT art world.
Is this because female artists are less talented? Or maybe they don’t like fame? Of course, neither of those presumptions is true. The world of art has traditionally been male. Historically, men had access to more opportunities and resources to dedicate their lives to art. Also, accolades were focused on their work, not the work of female artists. Similar to the arts, the finance world is also male-dominated and the cryptocurrency ecosystem (including NFTs) thus far has been mostly male.
For the past few decades, though, countless projects have aimed to bring light to the underrepresentation and discrimination against women in the arts. These projects have been making strides but there is still much work to be done. Projects like World of Women NFT art are dedicated to changing the male-dominated world of art. Platforms and projects like World of Women NFT art collection give voice and inspiration to female artists of various backgrounds.
Who Created World of Women?

Though Yam is the main artist behind World of Women, it quickly became a team venture as the project grew. What is World of Women?
Yam Karkai’s NFT artwork began as 10,000 generative PFPs, which are profile picture avatars that can be used on social media. These were images Yam drew by hand.
