In what is becoming a growing trend for music labels, Def Jam has partnered with Solana-based NFT project, Catalina Whale mixer, to launch a virtual NFT band. According to an announcement made on February 7, the band will be composed of whale avatars from the Solana-based profile picture (PFP) collection. As for the music, it will come from an “all-star cast” of musicians and producers whose names are yet to be disclosed. In addition, Whale NFT holders will have a say in how the Whales band is run.
According to Carlo Fox, the CEO of WAGMI Beach, the studio behind Catalina Whale Mixer, Whale NFT holders will also have the chance to have their own NFT avatars featured in the band through an upcoming audition process.
Fox also adds that his team’s entertainment industry experience positions it to “tee up these opportunities” for its community. Therefore, moving forward, fans can expect upbeat, energetic music from the newly formed virtual band.
What Inspired Def Jam And Catalina Whale Mixer To Create A Virtual NFT Band?
On his team’s inspiration for the virtual band, Fox cites Gorillaz, a popular non-NFT virtual band, and legendary musician and producer Pharrell Williams, who is involved with the Doodles NFT project.
For now, there isn’t much known of the virtual band’s plans; however, Benjamin Willis, cofounder of WAGMI Beach, notes that the working album title for the band will be “A Compilation of Vibes.”
Def Jam’s partnership with Catalina Whale mixer for an NFT-based music act mirrors the efforts of Kingship. Another virtual band that is made up of Bored Ape Yacht Club avatars with the aim of releasing music on the metaverse. Kingship is a product of 10:22PM, a sublabel that is under Universal Music Group (UMG). It’s the label that also houses Def Jam Records.
