Amazon is set to launch its own NFT platform as early as next month. An exclusive report from The Big Whale indicates that the ecommerce giant is set to launch this platform on April 24th. Initially, users of the platform will have access to 15 collections, with more expected to be added over time.
News of Amazon working on its own NFT platform broke back in January. The initiative aims to provide users with a place to trade in-game NFTs to further popularize Web3 gaming. Given the company’s standing and its massive customer base, this move could be the spark NFTs need to go mainstream. As of now, not much is known about Amazon’s NFT efforts. However, the upcoming marketplace could potentially pose a serious challenge to the dominant forces within the space.
NFTMe And The Many Other Web3 Interests Of Amazon
Over the past year, Amazon has shown great interest in NFTs and Web3 technology. Earlier last month, news broke that the company was hiring Web3 talent for its cloud services. Furthermore, in December 2022, its streaming service, Amazon Prime, launched “NFTMe,” a show sharing the perspectives of various artists, collectors, and industry professionals within the NFT space.
So far, the show has featured over 50 guests, including influential figures such as Refik Anadol, Queen Diambi of Congo, Cheryl Douglas, Susaye Greene, Peter Rafelson, and many others.
Additionally, its CEO, Andy Jassy, appears to be quite positive when it comes to NFTs. In the past, he is quoted as saying, “I expect that NFTs will continue to grow very significantly. We’re not probably close to adding crypto as a payment mechanism in our retail business, but I do believe that over time you’ll see crypto become bigger and that it’s possible that Amazon integrates crypto payments.”
